The IQA will be co-hosting an elite quidditch tournament on April 28 with Emerson College, Boston University, and the Boston Cannons, a Major League Lacrosse team, as part of the Cannon’s season Opener. Teams may apply or nominate themselves (or other teams) now.
By Todd Mitchell & Mari Watson
Want to play against some of the IQA’s best teams at one of the nation’s top collegiate sports facilities?
This April 28th, the Boston Cannons, one of the top Major League Lacrosse teams, will be co-hosting a quidditch tournament with Emerson College Quidditch, Boston University Quidditch, and the IQA, at the Harvard sports complex as part of the Cannons’ season opener against Rochester.
The tournament will take the top 10 available teams from around the country and put them in one of the highest levels of competition outside of the World Cup.
The schedule will incorporate round robin play followed by bracket play and ending in a final battle between the top two teams. Round robin will run from 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m at an external location ; athletes will then be transported to an Astroturf soccer stadium for single-elimination bracket play and championships from 3 PM – 6 PM.
Finally, the night will be capped off by admission to the Lacrosse game in Harvard’s famous football stadium along with 10,000 other Cannons fans.
Ticket prices are $15 for spectators and $25 for athletes.
Spectator Package:
- Admission to the Quidditch bracket tournament at the Harvard soccer stadium from 3 PM – 6 PM
- Admission to the Boston Cannon’s Major League Lacrosse Season Opener vs. Rochester from 7 PM – 9 PM
Athlete Registration:
- Includes all of the above plus:
- Participation in the tournament & free transportation between locations
- Access to free water and Powerade
- Bud Light Barracks admission during the Cannons game and 10% off at Miller’s Ale House after the games for spectators 21+
Teams will be selected via a nomination and invitation process. Official member captains are invited to vote for the top 20 teams in the league, and event organizers will pool the results to invite the top 10 available teams to attend. Regional all-star teams may also be nominated.
NOMINATIONS ARE BY OFFICIAL MEMBER CAPTAIN ONLY.
Check your team and/or captain email to find the link to the nomination form. If you did not receive the email, please email allison.gillette@internationalquidditch.org.
Discount hotel packages available at $35 per person per night. A limited number of teams may receive free housing from Emerson Quidditch – please contact allison.gillette@internationalquidditch.org for details.
Food, beverage, and merchandise vendors will be available on-site inside the stadium from 6pm-9pm. Tailgating is permitted!
Teams are required to bring one referee and one snitch to the tournament, announcers optional. There will be a training and testing session on April 27th, the day before the event, to verify skill levels for referees and snitches, and a training video underscoring refereeing style will be released before the event. Additionally, a weekly “Captain’s Club” will allow for captains of each team to meet online to review event plans and ensure that every team is fully prepared for the event. The tournament is being run under the direction of Allison Gillette, the Emerson College commissioner, former rules council member, and the gameplay director for World Cup VI.
This is a once in a lifetime Quidditch event that could very easily set the level of competition high for the World Cup next year! Come out and share the experience.
Please note – this is not a qualifier or championship; it is a one-time spring event that exists to provide the most competitive teams in the league with another opportunity for top-level games.

How will you guys determine who the top 10 applying teams are? Please don’t tell me you’re going off of short-season rankings.

The top 10 teams will not be determined based on the rankings thus far. I agree that would not be fair. There is a nomination process (so all OM captains speak with their teammates and rank the top 20 OM teams) we will then possibly take into account past records such as the world cup, but nothing will be based solely on the current “spring standings.”

Why such a late announcement? Most of the top teams from outside the northeast will not be able to attend on such short notice.

We were only recently approached by the venue owners and it took awhile to work out all of the details with them before we could confirm 100% that it was viable. We realize it’s not an ideal timeline, and we’re emphasizing that this isn’t a championship – it’s more of an exhibition match that is designed to showcase competitive teams who are able to attend.
The Boston Cannons usually get 10,000 people on opening day so it’s a great opportunity to try and show quidditch to serious sports fans, and we are going to try and get as many of the top teams as possible.

No matter if your team can come or not, everyone should try and support this tournament for the sake of quidditch. We love the sport, so lets try and get the word out that this isn’t solely a game to a lot of us, but life. YOLO. Peace and harmony to all

Emerson Quidditch also wanted to add that free housing will be available for a few teams, and they’ll be saving those spots for teams that are flying.

When would teams need to be there on April 27th for the snitch and ref training sessions? Morning, noon, evening?

I know you guys have thought this process out already but what if the teams invited were actual champions of tournaments this year. I don’t want Quidditch to turn into the BCS and be based on rankings. Here are the teams that would come.
Blacksburg Brawl: Maryland
Stony Brook Classic: BU
Ohio Quidditch Cup: scheduled for April 14th
SQuiB: Ball St
Swamp Cup: Miami
Mardi Gras Cup: Texas
Texas A&M Classic: Texas A&M
Ives Pond Classic: Pittsburgh
Western Cup: USC
World Cup: Middlebury
If you still aren’t convinced, check out my blog.

i like some of the teams such as usc ,middlebury, BU, Miami (Fl) i hope,Texas, not sure about pittsburg and texas a&m i think ucla could be argued also, ball state shouldnt be in their because they have the ohio cup coming up so they could win that, i think ucla should take ball states spot and ball state can compete for the spot in the ohio quidditch cup.
But hey its my opinnion, and its also yours

Good idea! Most of the bigger regions have at least two teams but the West only has USC. UCLA is very deserving considering they only lost by a snitch catch to USC in the Western Cup. I think Ball State could also win the Ohio Cup, so we can let them compete for that.

As for texas a&m and pittsburg im just questionable with them because i never really saw any of them play, the only thing i have with texas a&m is they won their own tournament on their turf, while looking at LSU the consistently made the top three teams in the Mardi Gras Cup and the Classic but then again they couldnt win their own tournament either but i trust your judgement better JackthePhan, pittsburg is a question mark because i never seen them play or even talked about but obviously they must be good

I would just like to point out that you have Cal-Berkeley in your top 20 and I don’t see my team (LSU) on the list. I love Cal to death, and am really good friends with their Keeper Sylvia. However, We beat them 170-30 at World Cup. (http://www.internationalquidditch.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/D1_Bracket.png)
And we’ve finished in the Top 5 of the past two World Cups. While we most likely can’t afford the trip, I believe we deserve a nomination and our recognition

This is a great idea Jack, but with such short notice I doubt all of those teams would be able to come which is why we are having OM teams rank the top 20 teams

It is a great idea, and I definitely support it. I just wish the date could have gotten pushed back. As evidenced above, there isn’t really a good way to pick the best 10 teams outside of nominations. Even then I bet most of the nominated teams won’t be able to go.
If you’re lucky I think you can get two out of state mercenary teams to maybe form. Regardless of the free housing, travel is going to be hell to pay after all of the tournaments most of us have participate in this semester.
While I understand it wasn’t a 100% viable until recently, it may have been nice to give teams a heads up earlier that something like this was in the works so we could have budgeted for it. We could have saved money up for it and bought tickets when it was confirmed to be a 100% viable. Worse comes to worst it didn’t happen and then we all had extra money to spend elsewhere or save up for next year.
Anyways, great idea, and I hope the teams that go really represent the sport well! If its anything like the SBU tournament (without the bad weather) I am sure it’ll be a great competition!
Thanks for the invite and putting this all together!

When will the winning teams be announced. It’s already short notice, and I’m sure all the teams who are going to end up going would love hearing sooner rather than later.
And please publicly announce it! I’d love to know who gets chosen.
