Penalty Shots!
Ohio Cup will be the first ever quidditch tournament to feature penalty shots! Two games in each pool have been selected as testing grounds for a proposed rule change that would allow penalty shots in quidditch. Teams have agreed in advance to testing this rule, and we hope that all games with this rule will be recorded for evidence purposes. The proposed penalty shot rules are below:
-Penalty shots will be taken when a foul is committed by the defensive team in their own keeper zone, or if an offensive player is fouled on an obvious scoring opportunity.
-A penalty shot is signaled by three short whistle blasts
-Any player may take the penalty shot
-A team has ten seconds to select their shot taker and get him/her to midfield once the penalty has been called
-All players, if they are in the attacking half, move to the nearest sideline. All others remain where they are
-When the shot taker reaches the midfield line, the head ref will hand him the quaffle
-The player, after receiving the quaffle, has five seconds to begin moving for his shot
-Once a player starts moving, he has five seconds to take a shot
-The defensive keeper starts on the starting line, and can only move once the offensive player begins moving. There are no restrictions on where the keeper may move.
-If at any point the shooting player’s momentum is stopped, the shot is over
-All regular physical contact rules are in play for the shot
-If the player takes more than five seconds to shoot, the shot is forfeited
-Once the shot leaves the player’s hand, play resumes as normal
-If the snitch is snatched off the pitch during the shot, the shot still takes place because the foul occurred before the snitch snatch.
Games featuring this system:
1. OSU v Kentucky (10:00)
2. Bexley v Carnegie Mellon (1:00)
3. Denison v Webster (11:00)
4. Ashland v BGSU (12:30)
5. Miami v TCS (10:30)
6. Ball State v JND (2:00)
Hunger Games Drill!
Recently, a drill mimicking Susanne Collins’ brainchild, the Hunger Games, has swept the quidditch world. Players throw balls to eliminate each other, and the last player standing wins. The game is started by gathering all balls into the center “cornucopia” and having all players stand equidistant from them. Once all players/equipment is in position, the “head gamemaker” will announce the start of the game, and players may use whatever tactics they choose to win. A caught ball has no effect on the thrower or catcher and a ball is considered live until it hits the ground (quite similar to bludgers). Players may also use any object they choose from the playing field to block thrown balls (a ball, a goal base, brooms, etc.)
The Ohio Cup is joining in this awesomeness by hosting the first ever intercollegiate hunger games drill. Players from all teams will be encouraged to submit their names into the reaping. Any player who wants to may enter. Between pool play and single elimination play, we will draw one male and one female from each team (or as close to that as we can get with regards to who’s interested), and the selected players will be entered into the games. The winner of this game will be given a very cool, rather shiny prize.

It’s cool that y’all are going to have a Hunger Games drill, but I’d like to point out that the original HG drill was posted by Sam Houston before other teams took it and started to modify it.
Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favour!

I drove down from Cleveland only for a few rounds ! Who cancels quidditch because of rain? This was ridiculous.

If there would be a penalty shot, it should be taken by the player who was fouled, like in hockey.

I don’t know, I was watching a basketball game the other day and thought about basketball free throws and soccer penalty shots. I think it’s interesting to say the least, and I like the idea.

Just wanted to say my quidditch team, Fredonia State, tried the HUnger Games drill out and we loved it! Alliances formed and alliances betrayed each other, which was really fun. The drill was helpful too; it’s probably the most helpful drill we’ve ever done that combines dodging, beating and running all at once. Other teams should try it out too!
