The excitement is building, players are training, and summer is right around the corner. The time has finally come for athletes across the U.S. to band together to form one quidditch team to compete in the UK during the historic Olympic Games.
This is our official call for Team USA player nominations. All team captains are welcome to send in nominations for any players on their teams who exhibit excellent sportsmanship and athleticism.
Though we will field as comprehensive a team as possible, all players who are selected by the organizing team will be responsible for having an open availability at the time of the event and for contributing to the IQA’s fundraising efforts to cover the costs of airfare, accommodation (if necessary – UK contacts have already set aside a house for 10 players), and uniforms.
The IQA will need to raise at least $2,000 per player to cover the items listed above, and it is expected that players will work hard with IQA volunteers and use IQA fundraising tools, resources, and networks (provided by the IQA) to actively cover as much of their cost as possible.
The exact date and location are still being assembled with local contacts, but the estimated date is July 8th, to coincide with an Olympic Torch ceremony taking place at a location just outside of London. Games will take place at minimum with a national team from the UK, but may also include games against Finland, France, Canada, Australia, and any other nations that are able to send a team. Additional messaging and announcements regarding these teams will be released shortly.
All nominations should include:
- Nominee’s first and last name
- Associated team
- Preferred position
- Relevant statistics (optional)
- Previous quidditch experience
- Justification for athlete’s acceptance to the team
- Head shot
- Action shot (optional)
- Further creative material (e.g. slideshow, video, rap, etc ; optional)
- Nominee contact information
- Fundraising and organizational experience
Do you have what it takes to be on Team U.S.A.? Interested captains should send the player nominations to luke.zak@internationalquidditch.org by Wednesday April 18.

Hello Mollywobbles. The article was published a bit prematurely, it was missing the following portion: “Games will take place at minimum with a national team from the UK, but may also include games against Finland, France, Canada, Australia, and any other nations that are able to send a team. Additional messaging and announcements regarding these teams will be released shortly.”

I’ve heard a lot of people reflect this, even off the site. Even non-quidditch players.
Selling jerseys, if its feasible, might help contribute funds for the players going. You could just take off the number and put ‘TEAM USA’ on the back.

What happens if the IQA doesn’t raise the amount of funds to cover player travel costs? Do the players have to pay the difference or is the IQA going to pull that money from somewhere else?
Evan Bell

I would assume the players would have to pay whatever is not fundraised, which gives those players incentive to participate in the fundraising. Hopefully, the fundraising will reward the players on an individual basis, so someone who raises their full cost needs doesn’t have to still pay just because another player didn’t raise enough.

I was just curious, because that might affect things a bit. Not everyone could afford that and if they’re stuck last minute having to pay that would kind of suck.

Iv’e designed a few shirts for merch use for the Summer Games and have emailed the appropriate person about the use of them. Hopefully when the event is closer i get a response about if they are being used, plus the sales would help recover the costs so it’s a win win situation
Looking forward to the event as meeting you all

There seems to be some disagreement on how players who play outside their home country will be treated.
My daughter (a former Class 1 soccer player in high school) plays Quidditch for the University of British Columbia, though she is American. There are several other foreign students on her UBC side.
Should she have her UBC captain nominate her for the US team? Is she eligible for the US team if she normally plays outside the US?
Is she eligible for the Canadian team?
I don’t think there is any logical reason for any particular answer to these questions, which mandates a specific answer, but an answer needs to be thought through for these questions, probably by the IQA.

I would think she could definitely be nominated for Team USA. Many Olympic athletes live in the US and play year-round, but play for their home countries when it comes time for the Olympics. Now, your daughter obviously won’t be guaranteed a spot, as many people are being nominated for positions on this team, but if her qualifications hold her up as a viable candidate for the team, I can’t imagine her living in British Columbia would stop her from making the team.
