The West is known for its exclusivity and harsh unfriendliness to outsiders. They may not be the most popular, they say, but they don’t need such trifles. Community has no place in quidditch here, as can be seen on their aggressively insular Facebook page, and at their competition-only style tournaments.

The looks of incredulity you’re collectively giving your computer screens are overwhelming.
The West is family, and every quidditch team in the league is an extended cousin. Our family grows every time a new team forms in the region, every time players from other regions wander onto Westbook, never to escape, and, today, in a new and exciting way. Just like at the end of all the good Power Rangers episodes, the region is happy to announce it is forming the Megazord. The teams of Western Canada are a proud, lonely bunch. Much of the major action in Eastern Canada is far away, and Canada’s regional tournament is seldom an easy commute. Now, these teams can look south to find all the competition and lovin’ they might desire. Meanwhile, down south, Mexican quidditch is just finding their feet. For the time being, these teams may choose their own regional tournament, whichever might be closest/most awesome. As such, the West(ern United States) as a region is no more. It is my honor to announce, for the first time, the West(ern United States, Canada, and also whoever from Mexico wants to come)!
Like a giant, evil-vanquishing robot, this newly expanded Western family will go forward a larger and stronger force for all that is awesome in the quidditch community.
Welcome, Canada, to the West! (And here’s looking at you, Qwertyrians.)
For those looking for a more boring version of these policy changes:
Regional Changes
- Western Canada, due to lack of team density and distance from the Eastern Canadian teams, will be invited to compete with the Western United States in their regional tournament and other tournaments. They will be considered for World Cup based on their performance in this tournament.
- Mexico, due to lack of team density, will not have its own regional for the time being. Its teams, in the meanwhile, are encouraged to compete in the US regional which makes the most sense for them. They will be considered for World Cup based on their performance in whichever tournament they choose.

As a Canadian West coaster I must say, it’s about time. See you at the Megazord tourny.

isn’t it more expensive/difficult to travel internationally for western canadians than it is to travel to eastern canada?

Canada is as wide as the US. If they’re south-western Canada, then they can drive to two of our bid locations (it’s a long, drive, but it’s possible). Vancouver to SF is 16 hours, Vancouver to Ottawa is 48. And, all you need is a passport card (not sure how this works for Canadians…) which is $48 dollars in the US verses a whole passport for lots more.
Travel between US and Canada isn’t as hard as travel between Canada, and say China.
And, they also have the option of going to Canadian regionals if it is.

This is assuming regionals will be in SF
but the point is still obvious.

Actually, I think if it’s PV then you can probably take an hour off, since you’ll probably be going 5 anyway…

Yeah, as silly as it sounds, it is usually way cheaper for canadians to fly south than east. Probably due to the vast number of flights going that direction.

Most people already have passports, and it’s just as expensive (if not more) to fly East. I’m really really glad this change has been made, YAY Western love

We are slowly absorbing the rest of the world – one country at a time. Soon, you will all be under the West umbrella. (I think we’re counting Australia in our region too).
We are the BEST!!!

It will almost certainly cost less to travel to the States or Mexico than to travel to Eastern Canada. As an example, I can currently fly round trip with hotel from Calgary or Edmonton for $400 for three nights. I can’t even get a flight to Toronto for that much, let alone a hotel room.
I know when my family (all Canadian) want to do a reunion, we do them in Mexico or Cuba (sorry Americans!) because it’s so much less expensive than meeting anywhere in Canada. Don’t get me wrong—traveling within our country is amazing (I just got back from my first trip to the Yukon!) but it’s definitely not cheap, and only gets affordable if you happen to at least have a place to stay with friends or family.
Good choice, I think! Now I really, really, really want my West jersey (which I ordered both because West is fun and because it was vaguely similar looking to the Roughrider gear and would therefore be fun to wear to football). Any news on when and how those things ship out?

The word from Harrison is “soon”. As in West jerseys are on their way or almost on their way, and t-shirts should be on their way in the next week or so.

I just want to say, THANK YOU!
this may be a guess, but as long as we’re allowed to play in the Western Region we will, mainly for 3 reasons, first, distance ($$$), second, competitiveness (style and # of teams), and third but most important, we just love being part of the west, West Coast Best Coast!

I think this is completely wonderful. (Mid-Atlantic here) It’s all good in the land of Quidditch.
